November 11th Council Meeting

Published on 15 November 2024 at 00:10

I was unable to attend the Nov 11th worksession or council meeting due to being out of town.  This post is to let you know how I would have voted and why.

Ordinance 2024-10 Amend Section 30.22 (raise hands):  I would have voted yes on this.  I really don't care if we raise our hand or voice our vote by roll call. The important factor here was the city was not abiding by the ordinance already in the Easley Code of Ordinances and has been since 1977. So somewhere along the line, someone decided to raise hands when voting, ignoring the ordinance.  Ordinances have been ignored and it must be stopped.

Ordinance 2024-11 Amend Section 30.08 (Compensation and expenses): What a shocker when I read this one. I would have voted NO!  Councilman Robinson did say he requested the pay increase to the mayor.  The issue I have is that the city was in violation of a state law by paying expenses as a per diem and was brought before the council several months ago but was tabled. During the council 'retreat' very brief discussion on salary copensation was held and did not hear anything else about this.  Now, there is this ordinance raising the salary of the mayor and council and when the salary would go in effect, there will be no expense payment. I spend a considerable amount of time on seeking information and researching ways the council can be more effective.  The other issue I have is I listened to Mason Sims podcast interview he had with the mayor and she stated she has her work schedule down to 3 1/2 days as most of her duties have been delegated to the city administrator. The expense per diem should have been the only item on that ordinance to fix the violation of state law. Salary increases could have been discussed in 2025 during the budget discussions.

Ordinance 2024-12 Extend Moritorium:  I would have probably voted yes for this but I do have questions and based on those answers would have determined my vote.  Hopefully these questions can be addressed in December.  The documents need to be RIGHT and not rushed due to a moritorium's deadline.

Ordinance 2024-13: The lease for the chamber of commerce.  Again, I have questions and the answers would have determined my vote.

Ordinance 2024-14 The lease for united way. I have questions and the answers would have determined my vote.

More in December!!
